The Common Thread: How to Structure an Academic Paper Cleanly

You recognise a good academic paper not by complicated words, but by a clear common thread. In this post we show you how to build your paper so that every page leads logically into the next.

1. Start with the research question

Everything starts with a precise research question. It is the compass for your entire paper — every chapter contributes to answering it. Phrase it concretely enough that you can answer it unambiguously in the end.

2. An outline that holds up

A proven basic structure:

  • Introduction — problem, relevance, research question, structure
  • Theory/foundations — define key terms, state of research
  • Main part — analysis or empirical work, tightly tied to the research question
  • Conclusion — answer to the question, limitations, outlook

3. A common thread means: nothing stands alone

Connect your chapters with short transitions. Every section should make clear why it appears at this point and how it contributes to answering the question.

Tip: at the end, read only your chapter headings and opening sentences. Do they already add up to a coherent story? Then the common thread is in place.

If you are short on time or structure, our subject specialists support you with an academically clean sample document — as a point of orientation for your own work.
